God’s Word Is A Mirror

Psalm 107 is one of my favorite chapters in all the Bible and it’s because I see myself in it. It’s like a mirror, I can hold it up and see my own life. Well, years ago, there was a moment in time when I was standing alone on the beach. You know how you can suddenly find yourself in a place where it feels like the world has stopped and there’s only peace? It was in that moment that I felt such a strong expectation in my heart. I found myself wondering “What does the Lord have for me here?” I was sensing something new from Him; something He wanted to show me. That’s when I remembered the words to a scripture song I’d heard. It was from Psalm 107:23-24 “They that go down to the sea in ships, and do business in great waters, these see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep.” As I was singing that song I could feel the Holy Spirit’s presence so strongly.

Later, when I returned to the condo where my family and I were staying on that beach trip, I heard the Holy Spirit say, “Read Psalm 107.” So, I got out my Bible and began to read . . . not only did I see my own life experience, but I saw the experiences of others, and observed that there were four different conditions that people were in:

1. Some wandered in the desert, lost and homeless. Hungry and thirsty, they nearly died.

2. Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, miserable prisoners in chains. They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High. That is why he broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one helped them rise again.

3. Some were fools in their rebellion; they suffered for their sins. Their appetites were gone, and death was near.

4. Some went off in ships, plying the trade routes of the world. They, too, observed the LORD’s power in action, his impressive works on the deepest seas. He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves. Their ships were tossed to the heavens and sank again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror. They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end.

Some were in rebellion against God and others were not, but in each case they all came to a place of knowing that God was their only hope and they cried out “Lord, help!” Reading further into each case you can see how He not only heard their cries but He answered them with miraculous salvation and blessing. He completely turned their lives and situations around. He brought them to health, provision and safety. Do you see yourself, your own life, reflected in God’s word? Are you longing for His help today? He’s good and He’ll hear and immediately answer the cry of your heart. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve cried out “Lord, help!” and He’s saved me over and over and over again. He wants to do exactly the same for you.

  1. We at Robinwood Church here in California have been in the Psalms for 2 1/2 years.

There is such depth there, on so many levels.

The things I learned there led me to take a 72 hour detour to Israel after a board meeting in London.

Fell in with the Haredi in a small town in Galilee. A close encounter with God in the village of Tsfat:
