“Deep Calls To Deep”

My most recent recording is a song that I first heard sung by my friend Steve Bell.  Steve is a Juno Award-winning artist out of Winnipeg whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years (“Unto the Least of These” duet on One Spirit).  This song was so captivating and haunted my spirit in such a way that I knew I had to someday record it.  It’s called Deep Calls To Deep and when I asked Steve about the story behind it, here’s what he said:

“I learned the song in a remote monastery in the Himalayan mountains of Darjeeling, India. It was the song a group of young Jesuit priests sang together each night before going to bed. They, of course, sang and played it with traditional Indian instruments with all the vocal particularities the Indian ear is used to hearing. Stunning really.”

As I am in the process of finishing the recording of my new album – “Wonders In the Deep” – it seemed perfectly appropriate to include this beautiful song of prayer.   Listen now to Deep Calls To Deep

Not sure I know what “deep calls to deep” really means. My brain doesn’t want to wrap around the idea but my heart tells me that it is when the deepest part of me calls to the deepest part of Him …or… when the deepest part of Him calls to the deepest part of me …or… when we both call at the same time, with one of us leading the dance.

Psalm 42:7-8 Deep calleth to deep at the noise of thy waterspouts , all thy waves and thy billows have gone over me. Yet the Lord will command His loving kindness in the day time and in the night His song shall be with me and my prayer unto the God of my life .

I enjoyed the little article about where Steve Bell first learned of this song …it feels so right to me …thinking of how these men must have embraced the Truth of the Word so lovingly , to let It sustain them in their times of service in far away and strange lands .

I too have been sustained by your music Mary Kathryn …Seven years ago my husband died very suddenly here in our home . We were everything to one another …friend , confidant, encourager , admirer, prayer partner and joyful lover . We have 5 adult children and 10 grandchildren …

About 4 years after his death I still was in sorrow and loneliness despite all the wonderful support of the many extended family . Then one day I picked up a CD by a person I had never heard of and it sat in the drawer for many months . The cover appealed to me and your bright smiling face …I have 2 bright smiling daughters !
Well one day I put it into the player and I am open to new sounds in music , especially worship…considering like you said the Church of Christ is of many nations and tongues . I let myself listen to it over the next few days with an openness in my heart and my spirit …to see what the Holy Spirit might say to me in it.
As the days went by it began to go right to my heart and then to my very soul …..my soul which sorely needed to be healed and restored again …my life had been so rich and full and happy before and I had been feeling so empty and parched and nothing to offer …I use to think I never loved Jesus enough and that ‘s why I was so dead .
However I knew the day after Bill died I was no longer his wife and I got serious and told God I knew I had to trust him to show me what He knew I was to become . I listened over and over to “Illuminate Me ” and the others on that Cd. I heard Jesus inviting me out into the glorious light of life again and it gave me HOPE and strength to rest in that HOPE ….I am back to LIFE and am pressing each day closer to a new future which I do clearly see for me ! Thank You for bringing the sounds and lights and colours of the Kingdom into my world again .

Heard this song for the first time last night on Revelation TV. I absolutely love it; the singing and guitar playing is so beautiful. Have just downloaded it and shared a link on Facebook so others can hear it too. I learned this song myself many years ago, and it was brilliant hearing it again especially sung by Mary-Kathryn. Thank you xx
